Losing an examination certificate is stressful, especially when a job or college admission depends on it. The good news is that the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has a process for replacing or certifying results.

What to do first

  1. 1

    Report the loss

For a lost or stolen certificate, report to the police and obtain a police abstract.

  2. 2

    Find your details

Note your index number, school and year. Your old school can help if you don’t remember.

  3. 3

    Swear an affidavit if needed

Some applications require a sworn statement explaining the loss.

  4. 4

    Check the KNEC requirements

Confirm the current requirements and fees for replacement or certification.

  5. 5

    Submit your application

Submit the completed application with all supporting documents and pay the official fee.

Documents to gather

  • National ID card
  • Police abstract
  • Affidavit, if required
  • Copy of the certificate or result slip, if you have one
  • Letter from your former school, if required

Protect your new certificate

Once you receive it, scan it in colour and store copies in your email and cloud storage. Keep the original in a waterproof folder, and only hand over certified copies when applying.
